France finale

Our edible "freebies" gathered while we wandered 'round outside our campsite. Pears, grapes, figs, blackberries and herbs (not pictured here).

The following are some remaining scenes from around the countryside.

Left, Nico displays his find. Right, a view of the village from a nearby field, which seemed to be reserved for fairs or something. In the background, "The Rock", as it's known locally, overlooks the tiny human habitation.

Some countryside scenes along the road.

We had the best hamburger in Europe while seated across from these lovely buildings in Crest.

The details of this nearby city center, it's hilltop replete with ancient castle. And, for you who appreciate the details of the European townscape, some architectural gemstones located in their usual odd places.

Below, scenes from a spot where we stopped for a bite to eat. For those who've never seen one, that is a "toilet" for the (quickly-disappearing) well-balanced European (and squeamish American tourist).

The parental home of one of our Eindhoven dog-walking friends. They moved here some years ago already, for retirement. This can be compared with relatives who move to Florida - permanently. We enjoyed a long, gracious dinner with this couple from the back yard which employs a perfectly-sized stone pizza oven.

The above is a tart of plums, got from the tree of one of their friends. So simple. I made one when I got home with some plums that Nico snagged (also not pictured at top).

You've enjoyed these photos of our trip to the Rhone region in France. Next time, a day in Germany, which was had already months ago - even before France. But time is irrelevant when joy is the subject.

  1. You guys made out like bandits with all that wonderful produce up top - so jealous! I bet that plum tart was just heaven too - love the pix of it being made and baked.
I have never seen one of those squat thingamajigs in real life - whoa! I uh, think I'd grab a bush down the road outside if that was at all possible ;)
LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing your travels… looking forward to the R & N perspective on Germany!

  2. I'm with Shiela-- I've heard about those toilets but never expected to see one in a westernized country. Can you please share the plum tart recipe? I know it won't be the same without the wood fire oven, but......

I'm so glad you're sharing photos and stories!
