Day in Monschau, Germany

This first photo captures the essence of this town. I kept thinking the whole time that I was in a replica of the city shot in the movie Sound of Music. We had a delightful day and, as you can see, perfect summer weather. I walked the entire village, though not daring to climb the hillsides to do any yodeling.

Just before and as we entered Monschau (pronounced by Nico as moon-shao), perhaps a two hour drive, at most, from Eindhoven.

Above and below, shots of the city's center. Below, Nico stands peering at a fountain created to honor the city's craftspeople.

Thought you fire engine boys might enjoy this one.

This house above right was amazing due to it's entrance alone - the gate standing near Nico opens onto a bridge one crosses to get to it. How they get cars in, we weren't able to detect. Lovely.

Nico pining near a bit of European nostalgia - a cigarette vending machine. Due to age restrictions, this machinery now holds only charm. I still am delighted when I run across phone booths. Dus...

Who is that schmuck... I mean cool dude? Doh! Why didn't I make him take that hat?

A Weber welcome and a sink for all seasons.

Inside view of a quite modern church interior. Get a load of that window and organ with square pipes.

Lunch, chomp, chomp. In the background, you can see the familiar house with the gate crossing.

And a couple nice photos. It's been a while since I had a nice 'me' portrait. Thanks Nico. My profile pic also comes from this trip.

Finally, what all people see as they exit - or 'ausfahrt' - from the highway in Germany. For some reason, the pronunciation of this word combined with it's meaning related to 'exiting' really tickled my funny bone and kept me in stitches long after we passed it (get it? passed it!).

Hope you enjoyed. Next time, Malta!

  1. One of the funniest shirts we saw in Germany said, "Where the hell is Ausfahrt, Germany?" because the exit signs looked so much like the city directional signs. What a nice day trip!

  2. LOL AUSFAHRT… ah the simple pleasures of new words in other languages :) Looks like a swell time was had by all in Germany. Nico didn't get that fedora? too bad, it looks good on him! What were you guys having for lunch - looked super yummy and good for you too! Where to next intrepid travelers?
