I had a full day yesterday so no time to enter anything for reading. But today I'm free except for one appointment and whatever I decide to use to fill my time.
Energy...ohm
Since about two days into this thing, my energy level has fluctuated between "sleep all day" and "almost normal". So, I've often wondered if I my energy level would get back to the normal day to day energy level I've always had.
I still don't know for sure if it will. I've read literature that says complaints about energy level is the most common complaint of people who experienced a stroke. But if by the end of the week I still feel as good as I have since Monday, I think I will have passed a turning point in my recovery.
Therapy with my leg has been slow - at least that's how it feels.
But that's because I was comparing it with the progress of my arm. I got my cane yesterday and now can walk in the clinic with assistance of a nurse. I'll be able to walk a lot more now which will enable a lot more than just walking. Circulation in my leg will improve, muscles will be strenghened, and bathroom visits will be more eventful. Eventually when I'm walking all the time (i.e. no chair), I also will be able to stop with injections to prevent thrombosis. Conclusion: walking is better for us than we know.
After having a stroke, it is sometimes the case that a limb is completely "numb" with no sensation and little blood circulation. But my leg is in relatively good shape - I have sensation from top to toe and, over the past week, the circulation in my foot and lower leg has has improved because of increased use. I know it has improved because they aren't cold anymore (like, "get those cold feet away from me!" or "your leg feels like a piece of cold turkey"). I've been wearing a sock on my foot when I go to bed but this week I've had to take it off mid-sleep as it was too warm. What a pleasant surprise this was - I hate wearing socks to bed. The stick to the sheets.
Flu, flu, go away
Tonight I had a bit of a sore throat which I hope is as far as it goes. Nico has had flu-like symtoms for 3 days now but he's strong as an ox so you know how hard it could hit me. Two more sessions of therapy today then I can rest for a couple days. I'll be with Nico again at least one night and day this weekend, the usual formula.
Until next time...
Don't forget the improved mental health benefits of being able to walk as well! Not only will you feel better about yourself as a result of being able to walk, but the exercise increases the endorphins in your body, creating a happier, more energetic you!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, Stephbo. I told my ergotherapist the other day that, by the end of my rehab (which will never end, actually), I want to be in the best shape I've been in since college. That will probably do something for my endorphins as well.
