Happy birthday, Nico

Nico's Okura experience was better than I'd expected. He was thrilled by things with which I'd grown too familiar to appreciate such as splendid interior touches and typically pleasant customer service. He described it as a "once in a lifetime" experience. I told him to stick with me if he wanted more of those.

However, we both appreciated the amazing food, one of the main reasons I brought him here. We arrived in time to enjoy a portion of sushi over lunch. Before dining, Nico asked me if he should bring his camera. Again, due to my lost child-like wonder that Nico has in abundance, I said no. After lunch, he carried it with him everywhere, not wanting to miss any future chances.

Below is our story in pictorial fashion. Too bad we couldn't also capture the smells, tastes and textures. I'll never grow up where my appetite is concerned. You can see the complete album on my flickr page. Enjoy!

Okura lobby interior with origami decorations and lamps that looked like jelly fish.

Our most unique and delicious portion of our evening tepanyaki, the duck salad - flesh and liver. And our "birthday" dessert. They weren't sure which one of us was having the birthday so they topped the plates with "Happy Anniversary". Fantastic .

Our flaming chef. Again, Nico was facinated by the little things. Here, the folded end of toilet paper roll.

A grand piano with diva. And the happy couple at the airport send-off.
