Amish country and Mexican food

Marion Cafe in downtown Marion, KY.

Wednesday, May 27
Had a light breakfast and read the paper a bit. Got dressed and ready for our Amish community tour. Gram, my cousin Pam, Mom and I traveled south toward Marion, KY where nearby Amish do business from their homes: mostly greenhouses, bakeries, leather shops, etc. We crossed the Ohio on the Cave in Rock ferry that is always a treat. The weather was fantastic, we saw a lot of countryside, wildlife and ate at quaint café in downtown Marion that served surprisingly delicious fare.

Scenes from the Marion Cafe.

Sights from around Marion and Amish country. Did you spot the rooster beside the 88 Dip?

A cool moth spotted by Pam in one of the greenhouses we visited. And me in the cafe's antique phone booth.

When we got home, I brought a chair into the shade, took off my shoes and, when I was done sitting, had a barefoot walk in the grass. It was great. The Amish women and children we’d seen walking outside shoeless had inspired me. It felt better than wood floors or carpet anyday.

The evening outdoors ended with cloud watching and dog filming. Ate two leftover chicken wings and steamed fresh asparagus, which we bought at the farmer’s market Saturday.

Talked briefly to Nico. He has taken in some abandoned bunny babies from his worksite.

Went into town with Mom and Gram. First some business at the bank then I wanted to buy a “bible” cover for my Miracles book. Found the perfect one. Then we went to Cracker Barrel and I bought some goodies and got to thinkin' about what to buy various people at Blixembosch in anticipation of my therapy's end: moonpies, GooGoo clusters, Cracker Jacks, etc. The sorts of things you can't get over there.

Lunch at home with folks: leftover fish and fixings. Worked on puzzle in the local paper for third day in a row. Updated agenda and worked on blogs. Want to get them as up-to-date before I fly back Saturday. Carolyn came by for a quick visit mid-afternoon (another sister chick).

Mom's Sister Chicks pendant. Seems like us RFD girls could have something like this, too.

At around 5, cousins Stacy and Kennedy dropped in to drop off some toasted pecan treats for me to take back. Yum!

Then at 6, I was picked up by the fire chief. Not 'cause I was on fire but because it was time to go out to dinner. Jeremy and Allie picked me up on their way to Sergio’s in Herrin where my friends Jennifer, Gary were waiting with their little gal, Jordan. The food was great but I wish I’d had my flexi-pants on.

Can you find Jordan being a monkey-doodle in the last picture? I love little girls who climb poles!

  1. What a fun way to end your trip! Love the Cafe and the plow horses are so beautiful :)
I think that necklace needs to be our RFD woman signature jewlery piece - we wear it on outings and for Girl's Trips! Love it - so fun.
Have a good trip home and say hi to Nico for us. Keep those bunnies away from the dogs! ;)
    Love,

  2. I love the chicks pendant-- we definitely could add it to repertoire. What's Nico going to do with the bunnies?
